Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance offers Train the Trainer sessions to individuals who wish to train others to recognise the early signs and symptoms of cancer (Cancer Champions). We also provide support to further education establishments who want to incorporate cancer awareness into their curriculum. We recommend that you attend one of our virtual cancer awareness sessions before registering for train the trainer. Our awareness sessions can be booked here.

Become a Cancer Champion Trainer

To date, we’ve trained over 6,000 people across Humber and North Yorkshire to recognise the early signs and symptoms of cancer. We’re looking for individuals, organisations and community groups to help increase this number. Our training sessions will provide you with the tools, skills, and knowledge to run your own cancer awareness sessions.

The training will refresh your knowledge of the Cancer Champions project, as well as helping you structure and deliver training sessions by assisting with the theory, planning and presenting.

Benefits
  • Ensures that your organisation/community has experts and mentors with the attributes, talent, and confidence to deliver training to others
  • Allows you to tailor the training to the specific needs of participants
  • Having individuals trained to be aware of the common signs and symptoms can help to increase diagnosis at an earlier stage
  • A certificate highlighting your skills and commitment in delivering cancer awareness training

Aims of the session

Sessions may differ depending on your level of training experience/qualifications, but a typical session will include:

  • Aims of the project
  • Why early diagnosis matters
  • Identifying audience needs
  • Planning and preparation
  • Teaching and Learning
  • How to assess and evaluate
  • Determine an action plan moving forwards
  • Answer any questions you have

The training sessions are delivered face-to-face and run for approximately 5 hours. Lunch and refreshments are provided.

Colleges and Sixth Forms

The Cancer Alliance also provides support to Colleges and Sixth Forms to help them incorporate cancer awareness into their curriculum. We provide tutors with the necessary background knowledge, presentations and support material to deliver their own awareness sessions to students. All content is designed to meet PSHE curriculum standards. We usually meet face-to face with a tutor for approximately one hour to discuss the following:

  • PSHE cancer awareness presentations
  • What literature we can provide
  • What the Cancer Alliance can offer as additional support

We’ve already worked with several further education establishments across Humber and North Yorkshire with great success. If you would like help incorporating cancer awareness into your curriculum, please contact hny.cancerchampions@nhs.net
