Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Nigel Wells as its Interim Chair.
Nigel will combine the role while serving as designate Executive Director of Clinical and Professional for Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board.
Nigel's appointment follows the recent announcement that current Chair, Simon Morritt, will step down as Chief Executive of York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (YSTHFT) at the end of this month, ending his two-year tenure as HNY Cancer Alliance Chair at the same time.
Lucy Turner, Managing Director, Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance, said: "Simon has been a fervent advocate of the Cancer Alliance since he joined in November 2023. We would like to place on record our gratitude to Simon for his support during his near two-year tenure as HNY Cancer Alliance Chair."
As Interim Chair, Nigel will oversee the work of the Cancer Alliance and provide leadership on the key issues affecting cancer services in the Humber and North Yorkshire area. He will chair the Cancer Alliance’s monthly System Board meetings.
Lucy added: "The Cancer Alliance and system partners look forward to working closely with Nigel to continue our work to transform the diagnosis, treatment and care for cancer patients in Humber and North Yorkshire."
A GP for more than 20 years, Nigel has worked in the Humber and North Yorkshire health and care system for many years. Prior to being appointed the ICB's designate Executive Director of Clinical and Professional, he held roles as Clinical Lead for Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership, alongside the role of Clinical Chair for Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group.
