Sharon’s story

Sharon Hornsby, a Contact Officer with Humberside Police, received treatment for early stage breast cancer after a free awareness session prompted her to book an appointment with her GP.

‘If I hadn’t done the Cancer Champions training, where would I be? Learning about cancer saved my life.’

The Peel Project

Sarah Muflahi, Volunteer Lead Co-ordinator, The Peel Project, said:
‘We organised Cancer Champions training because some people in our local community wouldn’t usually seek information about cancer and can be hesitant about going to the doctors. The face-to-face sessions were hugely beneficial as the group could learn together whilst receiving support from the Cancer Champions team.’

Testimonials

The cancer course gave me the knowledge required, regarding the signs to look for, and to act on gut instinct if I felt something was unusual.
Without this course, I don't know if I would have been quite so persuasive in getting the patient to see his GP.

Anti-coagulation nurse who spotted suspicious lesion on her patient

Attending the training encouraged me to seek advice about a mole on my back that had started to itch and I couldn't see it. I have since had it removed and got the all clear, but it could have been a different story.

After the training it gave me confidence to approach friends/family/colleagues with information and even ask if they have had things checked which I never would have done before.

I encouraged my 65 year old husband to go to the GP for a Prostate Cancer check, luckily the results are within range. Another family member mentioned they had rectal bleeding - so I encouraged them to go to the doctors. Luckily it was a couple of polyps.

The Cancer Champion programme is an important way of cascading cancer information to a wider group. Since becoming a Cancer Champion, I have shared the leaflets provided at the training with my work team.

I found the training very helpful and tell everyone about what I learnt on the course.

More people need to attend this training - I don't think people realise their value.

Being able to talk freely about all cancers with family, friends and others that we meet each day is really important.

The session was very informative and would encourage community groups to book onto the course to raise awareness of cancer.

Considering the subject matter, the session was very enjoyable and informative - I learnt a great deal.

Many thanks for your session with us at York Racecourse. The delivery was superb and the content was extremely useful, informative and even surprising in parts. If only every human being could go through the training.

Louise Daly, Commercial Manager at York Racecourse
